GRS vs GIA vs Gübelin — Which Certificate Actually Matters?

GIA

Founded in 1931, the most widely recognized institution globally. The standard for diamonds. For colored stones, respected but uses conservative scientific language — no trade terms like Pigeon Blood or Royal Blue. Trusted but less useful for premium quality designations.

GRS

Most commercially prominent lab for colored gemstones. Reports include origin determination, treatment disclosure, and quality designations like Pigeon Blood and Royal Blue. Recognized by major auction houses. Color designations directly influence resale value.

Gübelin

Considered by many professionals the most rigorous lab in the world for colored stones. Scientifically conservative. For Kashmir sapphires a Gübelin origin report is essential. For very high value stones, having both GRS and Gübelin is standard practice.

Which one matters

Rubies — GRS for Pigeon Blood, Gübelin for Burma origin. Kashmir sapphires — Gübelin essential. Emeralds and other stones — GIA and GRS both accepted. Diamonds — GIA is the standard. Every stone at Lithós carries certification from one of these three labs.
