The origin

Kashmir sapphires come from a remote high-altitude deposit in northern India, discovered in the late 19th century. Active mining was largely finished by the early 20th century. Supply is genuinely finite — no significant new material has entered the market in decades.

The color

Kashmir sapphires are prized for a velvety, slightly hazy blue that appears to glow from within. Gemologists describe it as cornflower blue — pure, medium-dark, neither too dark nor too pale. This optical quality comes from microscopic inclusions that other origins cannot replicate.

Certification

For Kashmir sapphires, origin certification is critical. Gübelin, SSEF, and AGL are the most trusted labs for Kashmir origin determination. A Gübelin certificate confirming Kashmir origin is considered essential for any serious purchase.
