Paraiba Tourmaline — The Electric Blue That Changed the Market
In 1989 a discovery in Brazil changed the colored stone market permanently.
The discovery
Paraiba tourmalines were first found in Brazil's Paraíba state in the late 1980s. Unlike any tourmaline previously known — vivid neon blues and greens that appeared to glow under any light. The cause is copper, an element not previously associated with tourmaline coloration.
The color
Vivid blue-green to pure electric blue. Saturation and brightness that persists in any lighting condition — unusual for colored stones.
Origin
Three sources — Brazil, Nigeria, Mozambique. All produce copper-bearing tourmalines. Brazilian material is the rarest and commands the highest premiums. GIA and GRS both certify Paraiba tourmalines confirming copper content and geographic origin.
