Bespoke Setting Available →The Story
In the 1830s, miners working the emerald deposits of the Ural Mountains near Yekaterinburg found a green stone that turned red by candlelight. It was named after the young heir, the future Tsar Alexander II, and its two colours were the colours of the imperial army: green and red. The Ural mines gave the world its first alexandrite and, for a time, its finest. They have since been largely worked out. Stones with proven Russian origin and a strong colour change are now very few, and most alexandrite on the market comes from Brazil, Sri Lanka and India.
