The Story
Padparadscha is a Sri Lankan word. It comes from the Sinhalese for lotus blossom, and it names a colour that sits between pink and orange, like a sunrise. This one was found in the gem gravels of Ratnapura, whose name means “City of Gems.” Sapphires have been washed from its riverbeds by hand for centuries, and Sri Lanka remains the stone’s classic and most trusted source. Padparadscha is among the hardest sapphires to match to a name. The colour has to be right, and a laboratory has to say so.
