The Story
Paraiba began with one man and a hill. In the late 1980s, the Brazilian miner Heitor Dimas Barbosa spent years digging in the hills of Paraíba State, convinced something was there. What he found was a tourmaline of a blue and green no one had seen: a neon glow, caused by copper. The first stones reached the market in 1989 and changed what collectors expected from the species. The original Brazilian deposits have produced very little since. Copper-bearing tourmaline from Nigeria and Mozambique looks similar, but a stone from Paraiba State itself is the one collectors ask for by name.
